Advanced Mountain Skills Course

Well developed mountain skills are key to enjoying our challenging mountain environment in a safe, responsible and enjoyable manner.

Having the skills and ability to deal with inclement weather, poor visibility, the need to relocate, navigate in the dark, move safely on steep ground and deal with an emergency high on the hill are skills that we believe every walker and climber should have.

Our Advanced Mountain Skills Course looks at all of these skills and more, leaving you as a rounded, skilled and confident walker equipped with a toolkit of skills to deal with all scenarios.

This is a four day course, which includes an overnight wild camping expedition. We can run this course for individuals or for groups at a time that suits you. Usually we run the course on four consecutive days, but we can work around your other commitments and run the course over a period of a few weeks if this helps you arrange your diary.

We tailor all our courses to the needs of our clients, so you can focus on the areas that you need to develop rather than relearning old skills. An idea of the topics covered on our Advanced Mountain Skills Course is below. All these topics are covered in detail and to an advanced level:

Navigation skills to an advanced level including:

  • Micro-navigation
  • Night-navigation
  • ‘Course’ and ‘fine’ strategies
  • Aiming off, attack points and tick-off features
  • Navigating off contours
  • Measuring distance, using pacing and timing
  • Relocation strategies
  • Walking on bearings and more advanced compass work
  • ‘Map to ground’ versus ‘ground to map’ techniques

Operating on steep ground, as an individual and as part of a less experienced group:

  • Footwork and movement skills
  • Route choice – picking a safe line
  • Dealing with scree and loose ground
  • Basic scrambling skills
  • Spotting and supporting other members of your group
  • Confidence roping

Getting out of trouble:

  • Use of a rope to safeguard members of your group on ascents and descents of rocky steps
  • Choosing appropriate anchors to safeguard ascents and descents
  • Using the rope to get yourself down steep steps safely
  • Crossing rivers

Emergency procedures:

  • Safeguarding a casualty
  • How to contact the emergency services
  • How to prepare for the arrival of Mountain Rescue

Wild camping:

  • Choosing a site
  • Camp craft

Other skills:

  • Risk assessment
  • Weather forecasting
  • Mountain flora, fauna and geology
  • Clothing and equipment choice

We can run this course in the Lake District, Snowdonia or in Scotland.
